SFBCA Meeting March 3, 2020

Agenda for SFBCA Indoor Meeting

Tuesday, March 3, 2020, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Birkdale Community Centre (Sunroom B), 1299 Ellesmere Rd, Scarborough ON M1P 2Y2

Dear fellow SFBCA club members & friends:

Please join us next Tuesday evening for fly tying, bamboo rod building, net handle crafting, fishing tales and more.

Fly Tying:

Jurgen B. plans to demonstrate how to tie a Water Boatman fly . This fly is good for trout in the fall in about 15 feet of water. It can be fished on top but is better fished under the water on the way to the bottom or coming up. Steady slow even pulls.

Tedy G. plans to demonstrate how to tie an Adams Irresistible.  It works as a mayfly imitation in rivers and lakes and is very effective in fast pocket water. This is a dry fly known for its excellent “float-ability”. Thanks to a body of spun deer hair (that is somewhat hollow), it remains buoyant even after getting very wet. Note to participants: Remember to bring strong thread that is at least 6/0 thick to spin the deer hair without nuisance thread breaks. Materials and hooks provided as usual.

Bamboo Rod Building:  There will be a special demo for rod builders and other interested members on how to wrap guides onto rod blanks. New member Kelly C. will show our builders how to start, end, and space wraps for snake guides we use on fly rods. He will also demo how his rod wrapping jig works to wrap guides on graphite float rods that he builds for his customers. We expect several folks will subsequently be working on their Ganaraska Special bamboo rod splines or glued up rod blanks at this meeting. If anyone wants to start a new bamboo rod project or revive a bamboo rod project that you would like to finish, contact SFBCA.Vice.President@gmail.com. If any SFBCA club member needs a culm to two of fine Tonkin cane, please contact SFBCA.President@gmail.com.

Net Handle Building: There are some new net handle projects in the works! Let Paul M know if you want to learn how to build your own custom landing net.

Thoughts of the of the week: We have at least 16 volunteers to help man our booth the 2020 Toronto Sportsman Show during March. Thanks to all!  Ray Cockburn is finalizing the booth duty schedule and will advise. General show info here:  https://www.torontosportshow.ca

Fishing Tales: Fishing is the common interest of our group. If you have a favourite picture or two to share, please do so. Ben F. recently posted a great ice fishing pic on our Member’s Only Facebook Group.

Fly Hooks Surplus:  If you want a deal on salmon hooks and larger streamer hooks for bass, musky, pike, etc. look here: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/706-53473-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5575378759&campid=5338273189&customid=&icep_item=324086527488&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229529&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg&toolid=11111
